Fighting on all fronts for a world without kidney disease.

About us

Recently named to NonProfit Times list of ‘2021 Best Nonprofits to Work' The American Kidney Fund (AKF) fights kidney disease on all fronts as the nation’s leading kidney nonprofit. AKF works on behalf of the 37 million Americans living with kidney disease, and the millions more at risk, with an unmatched scope of programs that support people wherever they are in their fight against kidney disease—from prevention through transplant. Through programs of prevention, early detection, financial support, disease management, clinical research, innovation and advocacy, no kidney organization impacts more lives than AKF. AKF is one of the nation’s top-rated nonprofits, investing 97 cents of every donated dollar in programs, and holds the highest 4-Star rating from Charity Navigator and the Platinum Seal of Transparency from GuideStar. Diversity We embrace the fact that each of our employees and volunteers comes to AKF with unique perspectives and backgrounds. We celebrate the diversity of our team, and we treat each member of our team with respect. AKF represents 37 million Americans with kidney disease and millions more who are at risk, and we involve and reflect the populations we serve. Equity We strive to ensure that everyone at AKF is treated fairly and has the opportunity to grow, contribute and develop professionally. We are committed to an environment of nondiscrimination in all its forms at all levels throughout our organization and programs as reflected in our nondiscrimination policies. We welcome job applicants of all backgrounds and provide a fair and equitable review of their applications. Inclusion Each of our employees and volunteers brings to the organization a unique cultural background, life experience, educational background, work history, talents and expertise, and we deeply value this diversity in our team. It is critically important to us that every AKF team member is genuinely valued and respected by colleagues & by the organization itself.

  • Black Americans are more likely to have APOL1 gene mutations that increase the risk of developing APOL1-mediated kidney disease (AMKD), a rapidly progressive form of kidney disease that can occur at a young age. Tuesday, April 29 is APOL1-Mediated Kidney Disease (AMKD) Awareness Day, and we are working to spread the word about APOL1's connection to kidney disease. • The American Kidney Fund is proud to have collaborated with Spherix Global Insights on the first edition of its new Patient Dynamix™: IgA Nephropathy (US) series, which provides a comprehensive look at the IgAN patient journey amid a rapidly evolving therapeutic landscape. This study reflects the voices of 127 patients diagnosed with IgAN. While many report satisfaction with newer therapies, substantial gaps persist in patient education, confidence, and affordability. It is AKF's hope that this study will contribute to pharmaceutical companies' understanding of the IgAN patient experience. Learn more: https://bit.ly/3XQBuVW

  • For people of central or west African descent, APOL1 gene variants cause an increased risk of kidney disease. APOL1-mediated kidney disease (AMKD) is a rapidly progressing form of kidney disease that can occur at younger ages and advances faster than other kidney diseases. Unfortunately, AMKD is frequently diagnosed late, often when kidney failure has already occurred, making awareness and early detection crucial. If your patients or your loved ones are Black, African American, Afro-Caribbean or Latino/Latina, we encourage you to start a conversation about AMKD. • This past weekend, the American Kidney Fund was proud to participate in #RPA2025 in Las Vegas. Our team enjoyed connecting with attendees who visited our booth #216 to learn more about our #KidneyHealthforAll campaign, the Unknown Causes of Kidney Disease project, and other key initiatives aimed at advancing kidney health. AKF’s Vice President of Patient Support and Education, Michael Spigler, also had the honor of moderating the Roundtable Conversation on Post-Transplant Care session. We extend our sincere thanks to all who joined us for these meaningful discussions, and to Natera for their generous support. Renal Physicians Association

  • As AKF wrapped up #KidneyMonth, our Ambassadors and staff gathered in Denver, Colorado, for the inaugural West Coast Kidney Action Summit! 🏔️ AKF Ambassadors from 11 states came together for a weekend filled with advocacy training, meaningful connections, and empowering discussions. Throughout the summit, they gained valuable insights into engaging with their local legislatures and learned how to harness the power of their personal kidney journeys to drive change at both the local and state levels. A heartfelt thank you to all the AKF Ambassadors who joined us—we appreciate your passion and dedication! We can’t wait to continue the momentum at our annual Kidney Action Summit, happening the first week of May in Washington, D.C.!
