How can storytelling promote engagement and retention in professional development?
If your PD is asynchronous, record a video with your phone of you telling your story in an authentic setting — backyard, at the park in a baseball cap, walking your dog, etc. The context deeply informs the way a viewer responds to the story. So don’t miss that opportunity. Verbal and non-verbal cues are what the emotional brain craves!

How can storytelling promote engagement and retention in professional development?
It’s vital to create trustworthy, safe places for sharing when incorporating storytelling into PD. PD facilitators who share their own struggles and challenges create more psychologically safe environments that are more likely to encourage participants to identify and share their own struggles. Storytelling may be a trauma trigger — acknowledge this and provide participants with options about what to share and/or to opt out.

Online classes hold the potential to expand college access to Black, Latino/a/x, Indigenous, and other students of color who must be supported to diversify the STEM workforce. Research shows that fostering belonging is key to the academic success of students from minoritized groups. However, online classes often lack interpersonal interactions and are often left out of research about the positive impacts of belonging. This paper summarizes an equity-focused STEM grant project that produced an openly-shared online professional development program, the Humanizing Online STEM Academy. Through the Academy, STEM faculty are introduced to a model of humanized online teaching that centers belonging as a way to address equity gaps. Participant survey responses present opportunities for future research about belonging in online courses.
