An Interview With Mary Hagen, CEO of Colossal

We sat down with our very own Mary Hagen to learn more about her and why she makes such an awesome leader. Hagen was appointed as our CEO at the beginning of 2022. She has over a decade of experience as a growth-oriented entrepreneur and has a background in marketing and operations. She’s launched an abundance of successful startups and has been a key player in the development of over 100 brands…you’re already beginning to see why she’s so awesome, right? Here’s more about Mary:

What’s your favorite part about your job?

I love being in an environment where opportunity is all around. When you walk into Colossal, there's just a buzz and excitement in the air that is pure—opportunity. Opportunity for the people who participate in our competitions. Opportunity for every team member here to grow and elevate their career paths. Opportunity for this company to do great things and make a real impact.

What is your vision for the company in 5 years?

Colossal is (and has been) experiencing rapid growth over the last year, and I expect that to continue over the next three to five. As we grow, the goal is simply stronger, bigger, better. Stronger relationships, bigger donations, and elevated experiences for everyone who participates in a Colossal competition.

Which personality traits make a good leader?

I believe good leadership encompasses a plethora of qualities—honesty, integrity, consistency, humility, the ability to communicate effectively and influence those around you, and so many others. But the superpower of a great leader is the ability to always see the forest through the trees. In other words, be able to absorb all of the details (the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) without getting hung up or bogged down so you can keep your sights on the big picture and what comes next.

What other CEOs do you admire?

Oh my goodness—at the very top of my list are Bob Iger (former CEO of Disney) and Richard Branson (arguably the most disruptive entrepreneur of our time). Bob's approach to leadership is paralleled by none, in my opinion. The guy exudes integrity in every aspect of business. From his hiring techniques to the negotiating table. He is decisive and sure of himself but, ultimately, open to possibility and not afraid to think outside the box—and take risks!

When it comes to company culture, perhaps no one does it better than Sir Richard Branson. His incredible ability to develop a positive, thriving, productive workplace is one that I have always admired. He has an extraordinary talent for finding exceptional people and a unique ability to step away (as appropriately) from his various businesses and allow his appointed leaders the space they need to succeed.

One thing that both have in common is their belief that good leaders empower others, and that is something I have adopted as I've been presented with this opportunity to lead a group of remarkable people here at Colossal.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

I try to stay active both physically and mentally when not at work. I am a bit of a gym rat (when time allows), I play a variety of instruments, and I have a small horse-rescue operation at our little ranch.
