Oatly is not milk, and we are not just food. Following that discovery, we decided to create a concept to highlight this small similarity , based on what we've seen, a large portion of the older generation does not purchase the product. However, we are pleased to report that across the pantry network, Oatly products are very popular in all demographics. Given this, we took it upon ourselves to create a shoot to reflect it's usage in Glasgow. When we contacted Jamie Sweeny (Engagement & Operations Support Worker) of The North West Pantry to use his store, he said: “We do indeed end up with Oatly products coming in from Fareshare's every so often, and it often proves popular. While we usually explain to people when they take it that it's not actually milk and many are understanding of this, it'd be interesting to know how many people aren't fully aware!” Our hope is to collaborate on a bigger campaign that educates the public on the reality of poverty and food insecurity, and that Oatly products are not just in supermarkets but in pantries, aiding in poverty alleviation. We have to do better. Too many folks experiencing food insecurity and as this one community member already housing insecure talks about having nothing and now???!!! Let’s figure out how to change policies to help our vulnerable and come up with real solutions which don’t include closing the only food market in South Balto—food apartheid!!! And many who are disabled in this community are more challenged because they lack access to getting food due their disabilities. You have to help people in need. That is critical. PepsiCo Foundation provided necessary meals for nearly 400,000 people. HOWEVER, there are far more people in need. How do we - de Beaumont Foundation & PepsiCo Foundation & others - work together to solve the problem rather than just treat the symptoms. Investments to pass policies to support food access and affordability, bring supermarkets to communities that also creat jobs. New York City has emerged as a focal point of attention in the area of food leadership, notably under the guidance of Office of Mayor-Elect Eric Adams. Advocating for a plant-based lifestyle, Mayor Adams has taken proactive measures to establish plant-based options as the standard across city-owned hospitals, and public schools now feature plant-based meals as the default on Plant-Powered Fridays. Additionally, older adult centers, homeless shelters, and jails provide plant-based meals at least once a week for both lunch and dinner. Let’s Embrace Diversity in School Cafeterias! March of 2023, Washington D.C.: Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (D-La.) and Congresswoman Nancy Mace (R-Sc.) introduced the bipartisan Addressing Digestive Distress in Stomachs of Our Youth (ADD SOY) Act, a bill which requires schools to provide fluid milk substitutes upon request of a student or parent/guardian. The majority of BIPOC can not digest dairy, and this causes distress, which makes it difficult to learn and causes avoidable nurses' office visits. That, combined with the fact that many people prefer non-dairy milk for reasons of health, the environment/climate change, and to prevent animal suffering means it’s time to offer non-dairy milks to any student that would like to choose them. No one industry should have a monopoly on a food group nor laws that prevent non-dairy milk from being offered, even with a doctor’s or parent’s note in schools. Currently, schools may, but are not obligated to provide non-dairy milk with a note from a doctor or parent due to the fact that schools are not reimbursed for the additional cost. “It is abundantly clear that the current milk substitute system that USDA employs is delivering detrimental impacts on BIPOC school children,” - Rep. Last Friday I attended an excellent event - the 2023 Harvest Breakfast Diversity Equity and Inclusion hosted by Second Harvest Food Bank of Clark, Champaign & Logan Counties in Springfield, Ohio. The speakers shared sobering Ohio and National statistics about diverse populations and food insecurity. Did you know: In Ohio 11% of the population is food insecure; 25% or 1 in 4 of the Black population is food insecure; and 18% of the Latino population is food insecure? (Stats shared by Hope Lane-Gavin, Director of Nutrition Policy and Programs at Ohio Association of Foodbanks) Nationally the food insecurity rate is 1 in 10. Whereas women, LGBTQ, and disabled led households are at a 1 in 4 rate of food insecurity. (Stats shared by Ami McReynolds, MBA, Chief Equity Officer at Feeding America) Ami McReynolds, MBA also succinctly cited Feeding America’s bold aspiration and one of the reasons why we love the work we do at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank: To Ensure: “Every community and every person in it have access to the food and resources that they say they need to thrive - To have opportunity, to have access, to have dignity.” Among many of the solutions Ami McReynolds, MBA presented was “Food Banks beginning to address root causes . . .”. This solution really struck a cord with me as the Greater Cleveland Food Bank has been on this journey for many years - not just distributing food but also addressing root causes. Now GCFB is poised to make an even bigger impact with the opening of the - first of its kind - Community Resource Center. By creating improved access to a variety of resources conveniently located under one roof, we can better address the underlying causes of food insecurity and in turn, provide more opportunities for long-term economic stability. Our Community Resource Center will include a client centered choice pantry and will be a place where various local nonprofit partners will provide on-site services to help clients access resources they need to address the common issues that cause food insecurity, which are often related to healthcare, housing, and employment. I have been involved in volunteer work this morning for “Meals on Wheels”, and it was truly rewarding to have the opportunity to help some folks out with their meals. I really appreciate that my company, FIS, encourages us as employees to volunteer. The FIS Volunteer Program grants us volunteer time each year and always encourages civic involvement. The Meals on Wheels program is especially important because many seniors find it challenging to access healthy food or cook nutritious meals. In fact, about 10 million older adults in America face hunger every day. The risk of malnutrition is also increased due to various factors that come up as we age, such as decreased appetite, limited mobility, and dietary restrictions. This is where Meals on Wheels steps in. Meals on Wheels delivers a staggering 251 million meals each year to 2.2 million seniors and counting. It goes beyond just providing a meal; it creates an opportunity to build relationships and strengthen bonds with each individual. This opens the door for local programs to identify and deliver valuable services that promote independence and well-being. Regular meal delivery from Meals on Wheels, whether in the comfort of the home or at a community dining site, provides tailored nutrition, social connection, safety, and more.
