Countries in southern and eastern Africa are facing the deadliest outbreak of cholera in the past decade. Cholera is an often-deadly infection caused by eating or drinking contaminated food or water. It can kill within hours. One in three suffering from cholera are children. The worst part of this story? Cholera is preventable. Cholera, like other waterborne illnesses, spreads through contaminated water into everything people need to live their lives – what they drink, what they eat, what they wash with. The most effective way to prevent cholera and other waterborne diseases? Clean water. Here's where you come in. This summer, we’re working in three countries to help stem the spread of cholera. Happy #WorldEnvironmentDay! Water is a vital resource, and there is estimated to be more than one trillion gallons of water in the world.* But only a small fraction of that is drinkable. Do you know just how much? *According to the city of Phoenix

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an increasing threat to global health and mothers and babies are at high risk. Next week, we'll be at the 77th World Health Assembly to spread a very clear message: leaders must prioritise clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene to slow the spread of AMR and urgently protect vulnerable people. Here Water Heroes Syed and Sharamon in Bangladesh demonstrate handwashing techniques to a group of children to share good hygiene habits and raise awareness of the right to water among young people. Sharamon explains the water situation for her community and why she works to advocate for improvement. "I live in Khulna, [Bangladesh] and here the biggest problem I see is salinity in water. This saline water is dangerous for both drinking and general purposes. This is why people who reside here require two categories of water – one for drinking and one for general use. The water that is used for general purpose is so saline that it cannot be used for drinking purposes. Managing safe water for drinking purposes usually comes with a cost which is not affordable by many people. As a result, many people end up drinking the saline water they store for general use. This leads to numerous health hazards.” Hygiene education is a simple and effective way to help people stay healthy, but access to clean water is a key factor in ensuring that knowledge can be applied. We're so proud to see the results of our work together with the PepsiCo Foundation in their new 2023 impact report! In Nigeria this partnership has directly reached 17,000+ residents with safe water, education, entrepreneurial training and more. This project is part of a three-year initiative between WaterAid and the PepsiCo Foundation targeted at improving access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services in communities in Lagos State. In Ethiopia, together we were able to rehabilitate a water point restoring access to clean water for more than 2,500 residents, who prior to this were traveling up to 3 miles to collect dirty water. Plumbing training was also provided, ensuring ongoing system maintenance, all overseen by the newly formed WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) committee. Read firsthand accounts of what this has meant for residents here: #PepsiCoFoundation

Changes in climate are most frequently felt through water: droughts, floods, and storms all increase the challenge of sourcing clean water for the 703 million people in the world – almost one in ten – who don’t have clean water close to home. Belita's story is one example from Malawi of how the struggle to source water has become more difficult with a changing climate. #WorldClimateChangeDay #climate #drought #flood
