The fourth and final panel today was a group of industry experts discussing: The Scaling Challenge: Why Does it Take So Long? The expert panel was moderated by Thomasine Dolan Dow, MII Director of Materials Innovation & Design, and featured Martin Stübler, Co-founder, BioFluff; Zimri T. Hinshaw, Founder & CEO, Bucha Bio; Aleksandra Gosiewski, Co-founder, Keel Labs; and Joshua Lachter, Co-Founder & Chief Business Officer, Synonym Bio.
Here are just a few highlight notes from the session:
-There is a lack of good words to describe in the next-gen material industry just as the food industry has struggled to make people understand.
-“The Materials Transition” likened to the “Energy Transition” - need people to talk about materials in the same way we talk about fossil fuels needing to be phased out for energy.
-Only way to meet capacity and price targets is scaling up, what are the economics of the bio-process. Every innovator wants ‘NIKE’ OR ‘Lululemon’, etc. to come pick their material, but what the younger innovators need to acknowledge is the challenges of meeting the demands of established consumer base that has a set expectations.
-An important lesson learned from this industry is new and old technologies can co-exist and bring about a completely new material (fibre and fur technology).
-Start developing products in partnership with clients. The earlier the better - working with luxury clients, most of the energy goes into making the product and understanding where to go when you start co-creating the product with your client based on consumer needs.

4moI love this concept, and the team's mission of creating more sustainability in the drug development process. I also love the inspiration for the idea. 🐠🙂 Proof, once again, of how approaching the world with continued curiosity can lead to amazingly creative solutions. Bravo team! 👏
