In the United States, approximately 70-90% of persons who menstruate in the reproductive age group report at least some premenstrual discomfort. Approximately ~25-48%+ of women have symptoms within the diagnosis of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). A severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) affects 3-8% of persons who menstruate. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) symptoms of PMDD include: Depressed mood, hopelessness, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, insomnia, overwhelm, muscle pain, swelling, headaches, among others. (https://lnkd.in/dmWk2hyD) Current treatments for these symptoms include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and oral contraceptives, and while these can be effective for some with PMDD, many of those with PMDD do not respond to either treatment, and both include significant negative side effects. Collectively severe PMS and PMDD create a massive health burden with negative effects on well-being, employment, social functioning, and relationships with partners and children. New treatments for PMS/PMDD are desperately needed. MindBio Therapeutics has recently launched two clinical trials aimed at the treatment of PMS and PMDD utilizing MB22001. MB22001 is a proprietary titratable form of Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD: A psychedelic medicine). →The first trial: microdosing in healthy people with a menstrual cycle (MDMENS) is an an open-label counter-balanced Phase 1 trial to explore menstrual cycle effects and tolerance to microdosing MB22001 in individuals with menstrual cycles. This is likely the first study of its kind to investigate the response to psychedelics across the menstrual cycle. →The following trial: microdosing in persons with Premenstrual Syndrome (MDPMD) takes this further in a randomized, triple-blind trial to determine if microdoses during the luteal phase can significantly alleviate symptoms of PMS/PMDD more effectively than a placebo. As these trials progress, we look forward to further understanding how these medicines work to treat these debilitating and widespread women’s health issues, transcending the limitations of our current inadequate traditional treatment methods.
