It's finally here. 🙌 World Leather Day! 🙌 A huge thank you to everyone who has been sharing their #leather stories and re-sharing our story assets too. We come together as an industry to celebrate and honour the enduring and unique qualities of leather. Our theme for this year’s celebration is “Repair, Reuse, Repurpose” emphasising the long-lasting, repairable, and versatile qualities of leather that make it the ideal material for a circular society. The repair, reuse and repurposing of leather promotes more sustainable environmental practices. By extending the life of leather goods, we minimise waste, landfill and reduce environmental impact. Know your #cotton: many #textile #apparel supply chains source and utilize Brazilian cotton throughout the world. Knowing the geographic origin is NOT enough to be certain that your #supplychain is secure. This is why we created CertainT for #traceability #transparency to the exact cotton that is linked to your supply chain for your brand. The Earthsight report on Better Cotton's link to deforestation and human rights abuses in Brazil - and showing up in millions of H&M socks and Zara denim, among other items - has really made the rounds, which is great to see. Here are some of the points that stood out for me, on why it's a problem not just for the obvious reasons — deforestation and land-grabbing are pretty self-explanatory, to a degree — but how it also crowds out farms and communities that are doing legitimately beautiful work. “There are two types of cotton in Brazil, and between them there’s a huge abyss. Ninety-nine per cent is conventional, and 0.1 per cent is agroecological, agroforestry,” Beto Bina told me. “Brands buy [Better Cotton, and don’t] invest in the communities that really need support because they don’t have incentives, they don’t have credits at the bank.” Real solutions require real work, which is the root issue here. Brands are blaming Better Cotton for not doing more, but they turn to Better Cotton in the first place because it is a way to claim progress without making real change. “Simply dropping Better Cotton in favour of an alternative scheme is not good enough. The company must accept responsibility for the environmental and human impacts of the cotton it uses and do a much better job to clean up its supply chains,” said Earthsight's Rubens Carvalho.
